Morocco-Senegal: A Strengthened Partnership in the Transport Sector

Logis-T Africa – On August 29, 2024, a high-level meeting was held in Rabat, marking a new chapter in Moroccan-Senegalese relations in the field of transport and logistics. Mohammed ABDELJALIL, Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, welcomed his Senegalese counterpart, Malick NDIAYE, Minister of Infrastructure and Land and Air Transport, for a working meeting at the ministry headquarters.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

The two ministers praised the excellence of relations between Morocco and Senegal in the field of transport, emphasizing their shared desire to further strengthen bilateral cooperation ties, particularly in the railway sector. The Senegalese minister expressed his country’s wish to benefit from Moroccan expertise in the transport field, demonstrating the trust placed in the kingdom’s know-how.

The meeting allowed for the exploration of numerous cooperation opportunities, covering a wide range of sectors:

  1. Railway maintenance
  2. Road and air transport
  3. Road safety
  4. Logistics
  5. Airport management
  6. Maritime transport

The two countries also agreed to strengthen their mutual support within international organizations such as ICAO, IMO, and ITF, demonstrating their commitment to unifying their visions and efforts on the international stage.

Concretization of Commitments

This meeting was crowned by the signing of two major framework cooperation agreements:

  1. An agreement between the National Railways Office (ONCF Group) and the National Company for Heritage Management of Senegal’s Regional Express Train (SENTER-SA)
  2. A convention between the Railway Training Institute (IFF) and SENTER-SA

These agreements testify to the concrete commitment of both nations to collaborate closely in the railway sector, a key area for the development of transport infrastructure.

Future Prospects

The ministers agreed to finalize ongoing agreement projects and develop an action plan to implement the signed conventions. They also discussed the establishment of a joint commission for international road transport (TIR), highlighting the importance given to facilitating trade between the two countries.

In a symbolic gesture, Mr. ABDELJALIL invited his Senegalese counterpart to participate in the 4th World Conference on Road Safety, scheduled for February 2025 in Marrakech, thus reinforcing the commitment of both nations to improving road safety.

This meeting marks an important step in strengthening ties between Morocco and Senegal in the transport sector. It paves the way for closer and more diversified collaboration, promising significant advances in the development of transport infrastructure in both countries.
